We live in a fast-paced world and we love to get things done. Creative journaling is an opportunity to slow down. It takes more time to do, which provides more time to hear from God and be present in what He is revealing. God is not in a hurry and most often speaks the loudest in the softest whisper. This is not natural for us. We usually speak louder and more impatiently when we want to make sure we are heard. Journaling is a discipline that requires positioning ourselves in a posture that can help us wait on God. There is an expectant attentiveness that comes to us when we take journal and various media in hand.

Creative journaling increases that expectancy as we open up the desire to be creative with God, the Creator. God loves to share His creativity with us and creative journaling is an avenue for Him to share that creativity. The more media God has to choose from to talk with us, the more of His joy to share with us.

Creative journaling is an opportunity to ask God questions like these:

• What color do you want to use?
  
• What shape is that?
  
• What texture is Your heart right now?
  
• What line can I trace to find my heart’s cry, Lord?
  
• What picture captures the essence of what you are saying to me right now, Lord?
  

When we journal in this way, we have an individual encounter with God, but then we can share what we have gleaned from our time with God. This brings the opportunity to share more in depth with others -- bringing a deeper sense of community. As others add their inspiration to ours, a bigger picture is revealed. Everyone wins and Body Life becomes richer.

Creativity is about exploring options (and even inventing some) to solve problems or to communicate perceptions. When we use creative journaling to enhance our relationship with God, we use the disciplines of stillness, listening, and intuitive following to receive more revelation about God, self, others, and our world.
